This was Cooper's 2nd year playing Upward Basketball. Once again he had the opportunity to be on a team with quite a few of his buddies from school and to be coached by one of his best buddies dad and Hazel's teachers husband, Seth.
Introducing the Tarheels!!!
Sam, Tim, Wyatt, Judah, and Cooper are all 4th graders at Crosshill.
Cooper made some great shots this year and really grew as a basketball player.
We also did a lot of this...
One of the things we love about Upward is how they emphasize sportsmanship and Christlikeness above winning. Seth is a great coach and our boys have played together for a couple of years already so our team last year and this year did really well. This year in particular we were heavy on 4th graders and kind of dominated all of the other teams. While most teams at this age were working on dribbling and shooting Seth had our boys running plays which was pretty impressive, but also posed a challenge as often by the 2nd quarter we were already up 20 to 2 or something along those lines. At this point Seth would challenge the boys pass the ball at least 5 times before they took a shot, he'd outlaw fast breaks, and he'd try to get them to run more complicated plays. When that wasn't enough he would actually encourage them to let the other team make a couple shots which looked like Cooper ducking in one game so that a kid from the other team could complete a pass and Tim handing the ball back to the player he was guarding. Not sure what to do with that.... Perhaps our most unevenly matched game was mid season. The other team only had 6 players and no head coach so by the end of the 1st quarter they wanted to forfeit. On that game we ended up moving 2 of our best players over to the other team and Seth actually coached that team while our assistant coach coached ours. We couldn't have been prouder of our boys. They had a blast and learned a lot about good sportsmanship this year.
The twins are still in that hard to sit still but to little to let run around stage, but we survived and I'm hoping next year with them feels significantly easier.
GREAT SEASON TARHEELS!!!
